Wakefield One was designed to be a low energy building to house Wakefield Council’s library, museum, civic offices and a café. The design produces 30% less carbon than conventional comfort cooling. The exposed concrete frame is an unusual design feature, using concrete’s thermal mass to help to achieve the targeted award of BREEAM Excellent. Bridging the vacant land between the city centre and the railway station, the building is at the centre of the council’s Merchant Gate Masterplan and won accolades including a RIBA Sustainability Award and BCO Award for Best Corporate workplace in the North.
